COMAC Wins First ARJ21 Bizjet Order
The ARJ21, a new domestic feeder jet currently undergoing flight test certification, received a new order from a domestic private enterprise. The particular model ordered is the ARJ21 business jet. A CBN reporter today learned from plane-maker COMAC that the company has signed a letter of intent with the Shanghai Yan Shang Group for the purchase of one ARJ21 business jet. The Yan Shang Group becomes the launch customer of the ARJ21-700 business jet.
To date, orders of the ARJ21 series have mostly been for the 70-90 seat feeder liner versions. COMAC has won orders for 252 ARJ21-700 aircraft from 13 domestic and international customers. Earlier, COMAC insiders told our reporter that COMAC is continuing to develop business and cargo versions in order to meet requirements of their various customers.
It is intended that the ARJ21-700 will be developed into a whole series of aircraft, and the letter of intent to purchase the business jet version marks the first step in this serialization. This reporter understands that the two parties are expected to sign a formal agreement in the second half of this year detailing purchase price and delivery schedule, both of which are still under negotiation. The Yan Shang Group is a private enterprise conglomerate with its main businesses in many different areas including asset management, investment, real estate, industrial parks, and international trade.
The ARJ21-700 aircraft is expected to obtain type certification from the CAAC by the end of this year. The first two aircraft to be delivered to customers rolled off the assembly line at the end of 2013. Launch customer Chengdu Airlines expects to take delivery at the beginning of next year.
It is noteworthy that, on the world scene, Boeing, Airbus and other aircraft manufacturing giants are also manufacturing business jets in addition to the production of airliners. To date, Boeing's BBJ series and Airbus' A319 series have also won orders from within China.
